Carla Mateus
Dr Carla Mateus is an Assistant Professor in the ICARUS Climate Research Centre
and Geography Department at Maynooth University. Her research interests primarily
focus on climate science, specifically climate change, extreme weather events and
impacts. Carla loves looking for historical meteorological observations in old
manuscripts to place the current climate change into historical context. Carla is
passionate about disseminating her climate science research to diverse audiences
through science communication, outreach, and public engagement events. She has
also published for RTÉ Brainstorming. She has received a public engagement grant
from the European Geosciences Union to carry out the project ‘Prison talks: bringing
climate change conversations into the Irish prisons’.
She has published several peer-reviewed papers in international journals and
disseminated her research at multiple national and international conferences.
Carla is from Portugal and she first came to Ireland in 2014 as part of an Erasmus
placement. She fell in love with Ireland and decided to stay to develop her academic
career. Carla obtained her PhD from the University of Galway in 2021 and
subsequently joined Met Éireann as a Postdoctoral Researcher before joining
Maynooth University in 2023.
